From bookkeeping to tax filing
Work begins with checking transactions and balances and preparing financial statements and audit schedules. Where a statutory audit is required, a Hong Kong practising accountant completes the audit and signs the report before the completed accounts and tax adjustments are used to finalise the profits tax computation and return.
Where accounts have already been completed by a previous accountant, final statements and schedules provide the starting point. Missing records and prior years are listed separately to avoid duplication or gaps.
Documents required
Company particulars, accounting period, tax return and correspondence, together with current books and the previous completed financial statements.
Bank and payment platform records, sales, purchases and expenses, plus schedules for inventory, assets, overseas transactions or shareholder balances where applicable.
Submission and follow-up
Check the period and deadline on each return or notice, together with previous responses and extension records. Services also include assessing eligibility for filing extensions and holdover of provisional profits tax and preparing the relevant applications.
After the client confirms the accounts and tax information and completes the required signatures, submit the completed return, profits tax computation, financial statements and auditor’s report as applicable, and follow up tax correspondence within the engagement scope.
Business books, bank statements, invoices and income and expense records must be retained for at least seven years.

Frequently asked questions
What is needed when records are held by a previous accountant?
The handover should include final accounts, schedules, submitted returns and submission records for completed years. Missing documents and catch-up work are identified when taking over.
How does the profits tax calculator differ from tax filing services?
The calculator estimates tax from the assessable profits entered and is useful for an initial budget. Tax filing services use company accounts to review deductions, profit sources, losses and other tax adjustments, then prepare the tax computation and filing documents.
What is needed when the filing deadline is close?
The return or notice, its deadline and the available accounts are needed to establish the work and missing records. Any extension or other application must follow the applicable requirements.
